What is Coaching?
Coaching is when an individual uses a structured process or model and open questioning techniques to communicate with another individual. This is usually in the format of a conversation between two people but can also be used in a group format. The model used should be appropriate to the individual or group. Coaching is not about the past but is focussed on the future, creating solutions and fully exploring possibility. Questions used in coaching should, when possible, be framed in the positive and be simple and easy to understand. Coaching is about providing an individual with time and space to think.
The Purpose of Coaching
“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” Benjamin Franklin
ICF (International Coaching Federation) defines coaching as partnering with others in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. Pioneer of coaching and leadership, Sir John Whitmore echoes this description with his definition ‘Coaching is about unlocking people’s potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them’. The ability to learn, actively develop self-awareness, critically analyse situations and manage reactions are emerging as the true indicators of great personal leadership and markers of potential success. A coaching approach to communicating with others is a key leadership trait and coaching is recognised as a truly transformational learning methodology.
How can Coaching Benefit an Organisation?
